August 14, 2000 e-mail from Keneth Willmott at ormand@webtv.net from Greeley, CO. Orie Putnam owned a filling station called The Putman Oil Company in Ft Lupton. CO. Ken did not know the wife's name, but they had 4 children. First child was named Neil, next child was theres and they adopted 2 more. He delivered gas to the farmers and lived in the house in back west of the station. The gas station was located in the south west corner of the south end of Ft Lupton main drig through town known in those days as US Highway 85.

Mary Elizabeth Stevenson Renfro's Letters

The Stevensons all lived in NJ. My Father(Clayton) was partly raised in Michigan. The 4 brothers(Clayton, Joseph, James & Aaron) came to MO and I don't recall what year. My mother (Emly Alice Benham) passed away March 28, 1928 at my home in Sedalia, MO and James Stevenson never lived in Arkansas. He died in Morgan Co, MO. [not sure last statement is correct]

My aunt Mary (Stevenson Swaim) had a number of children and I use to hear from a married daughter before I was married. I new my aunt and uncle were Methodist, she wrote that she had a book of the Stevenson History so there must be someone in the area that would no where the other children are. I sure would like to of had that book. The Stevenson man married a Jennig on girl was where the Estate was in England. So my father (Clayton) always said and his grandfather (Joseph born 1772 who married Rachel Peterman), my father's grandfather was quite well to do and he deeded all his land and money to a younger son. And my father's father had no more to do with him.

My father (Clayton Stevenson) was born in NJ and reared in Michigan. US Grant was a cousin to his mother (Catherine Cross Stevenson) and Robert Louis Stevenson was supposed to be related from away back.

This letter was deciphered by Anna Burns Renfro written to her by Mary Stevenson Renfro. I can not find a date on the letter. "There was Royal blood connected in Stevenson Family. Her father (Clayton) said his grandfather & a great uncle hired 2 laywers to go to England to collect the Estate & they came back & didn't do any good. Her father (Clayton) always thought the lawyers were bought off. She never saw either of her grandparents as they were dead when she was born. Her brother Ruben and sister Anna saw her grandmother on her mother's side (Emily Jane Porter). Her father (Clayton) was a cousin of U S Grant that is their mothers were first cousins. (Still can't be proved). Her father's mother (Catherine Cross) was the mother of 13 children & she died young (1853 in Dryden Michigan). She left a tiny baby girl (Rachel). Clayton had 3 sisters that she received letters from. She was named for her Aunt Mary Swim in NJ. An older brother[Bill] went to Australia when he was 20 years old & few years before her father passed away they got letters from him. She said that red hair ran in her family from her grandfather (I B Benham)on her mother's side. He was Irish & her mother's parents came from NY State. I B passed away when her mother (Emily Alice Benham) was 6 years old. Her grandmother (Emily Jane Porter) remarried & had 2 girls by a (William) Fair. "
