At the time of his death someone took his money from under the bed. Anna Bell Gregory asked Blind Duncan about this and he said that Aunt Lou had taken the money, but she would return it, which she did. Verna Gregory told how when grandpa Gregory got his pension check, he would always do something special for them. The kids would run around the neighborhood bragging about it. James first enlisted in Company C of 60th Regt. E.E.M.M with William Henry Liggett as our Captain in the fall of 1862. He never received any discharge from this Company, but enlisted out of this Company into Company K 11th, Missouri Volunteer Cavalry in Hermitage, Hickory Co, MO. James Gregory was in the 11th Reg Mo Calvary Company K. He served from July 28, 1963 to July 27, 1865 and was mustered-out in New Orleans, La. When he left the service, he kept his revolver. According to Verna Gregory, and James R Gregory, James Marion told them he was part Indian. He did not state what tribe he belonged to, but he took his grandson Arther Edward "Deck"Gregory out hunting and fishing. James would not let his grandson speak, he had to be very quite. Probably James told Arthur Edward about his Indian Heritage, unfortunately it was not told to anyone else in the family. James R Gregory told how about a month before his grandfather, James Marion died, his hair turned white. Before that time he had coal black hair with a braid. Verna also said he wore a braid. James Marion lived with his son, William Henry Gregory and his wife, Anna Belle Speaker after Martha Walker Gregory, his wife died. James Marion died in Sedalia and his body was taken by train to be buried next to his wife in Osceola, Mo. James R Gregory remembers going with his father, William Henry, to Osceola for the buriel.

I remember great grandpa Gregory as a young child, shortly before he died. Every year after his death, my grandmother (Verna), Helen, Grace and my mother (Anna Burns) would go to my great grandmother's house and clean it for her. I remember pumping fresh water from the well behind the house, or drawing water from the bucket on the back porch. Several times my girlfriend (Linda Allcorn Romig) and I would ride our bicycles to great grandma Gregory's house. Her home had been bought by my great uncle Deak (Arthur) and he had fixed it up for her.

I have very fond memories of my grandmother while growing up. She lived just a half a block away and always drove me to school. Fortunately, she lived to see her great grandson, David Weston Anderson. I remember as a child, when I would get mad at my parents, I would stand at the edge of our property and yell for my grandmother to "come and get me." As far as I remember, she never came and got me, but let me work things out with my parents.

Papa (as I called my step-grandfather) was the only grandfather that I knew on my mother's side of the family. I remember him sitting in his green chair with his thick glasses. He was a grandfather to me and a father image to my cousin, David Bryce.

James told how when he was a small child, his cousin, Helen Estes wanted to see his new gun. He refused to let her see it and she hit him in the head with a hoe. He told me that he still had the scar from that hoe, and this was shortly before he died. James was so proud of his Northern Cherokee Indian Card which he obtained the year of his death. He remembered his grandfather, James Marion Gregory, who lived with them. About one month before James Marion died his hair turned white, before that time it was coal black and he wore it in a braid.

Mix in this order: 1cup sugar;2Tbs cocoa; 2Tbs flour(heaping);2 egg yolks (save whites for meringue);2 cups of milk. Cook until thick, then add 1Tbs butter and 1 tsp vanilla. Pour into cooked pie shell and then fix meringue.
